Abstract

The paper discusses the concept of beauty in Plato’s Hippias Major. Author analyzes all of the definitons of beauty which are offered in the dialogue and recognizes epagoge as key method, which  takes two directions: first – through the objects, resulting with suitability (prepon) as definiton of beauty, definiton which  essentially implies relationalism and consequently, in Plato's opinion, relativism; second direction – to subjective mind, resulting with definition of beauty as quality that gives pleasure to the senses, that means making relation with human senses (human mind); relationalism appears anew implying relativism anyway. That is, in author's opinion, the reason why Plato had given up on this way of investigation as far as beauty is concerned.
