Abstract

In this paper, I examine the postmodern reception of Kant’s concept of
the sublime, focusing in particular on the work of Gilles Deleuze and highlighting
its Romantic dimension. The concept of the sublime, central to Romanticism in
philosophy, literature, and the arts, also plays a signifi cant role in postmodern thought.
Thinkers such as Jean-François Lyotard and Gilles Deleuze draw on Kant’s refl ections
on the sublime, developing them while simultaneously off ering critical perspectives. I
argue that postmodern authors, through their engagement with Kant’s critique, uncover
its Romanticism, showing how Kant – though a rationalist in his earlier writings
– comes to represent, in the Critique of the Power of Judgment, a pivotal fi gural
moment for understanding the sublime. Through an analysis of Deleuze’s reception
of this concept, the paper points to the Kantian dialectic between rationality and
Romanticism, as well as to the ways in which Deleuze radicalizes certain Romantic
elements present in Kant while also abandoning other aspects – particularly those tied
to the concept of the individual – that remain operative in Kant’s thought.
