VAN GOGH’S SHOES: HERMENEUTIC EXPERIENCE OF WORK OF ART
Main Article Content
Abstract
In thispaper Ianalyzetheconsequencesof Schapiro`scritiqueof Heidegger`s hermeneutic reflection on the essence of art. In his investigation of the origin of the shoes painted by van Gogh – this particular painting was used by Heidegger in his hermeneutic analysis and the establishment of hermeneutics (interpretation) as a legitimate approach to art – Schapiro concludes that Heidegger`s thesis is incorrect. In this paper I argue that Schapiro`s critique does not render obsolete Heidegger`s thesis on the essence of art, and that interpretation cannot be excluded from any speculative reflection. In the argumentation I follow both Heidegger`s philosophy and the contemporary research of neuroscience and the philosophy of mind.
