Abstract

This paper is about the problem of individuation, which has significantly marked Western medieval philosophy. The problem of individuation will be presented from the ontological perspective, as the question of what is it which makes a singular entity's being. The question will be addressed through parallels of the problem of individuation and the incomprehensiveness and ineffability of the Divine being, encapsulated in the term esse. The analysis will show that both of the two basic approaches to the problem of individuation, the inclusive and the exclusive approach, are problematic because of the logical-metaphysical relation between substance and accidence on which they are based.
