FRIEDRICH SCHLEGEL AND THE LONGING FOR A NEW MYTHOLOGY
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this paper, Friedrich Schlegel’s claim from the Dialogue on Poetry that
modern poetry lacks the kind of center that mythology itself was for ancient poetry, is
interpreted as an expression of a quest for a center undertaken by an entire generation
of creators from the revolutionary era in Europe, a generation that understood art as
the highest form of its freedom. From the romantic standpoint, artistic creation is the
medium of genuine human individuation, yet Romantic individuality simultaneously
yearns for the establishment of a trans-individual sphere as a sphere of togetherness.
The author examines the longing for a new mythology as the longing for such a sphere,
a sphere within which the individual creation would gain universal meaning without
jeopardizing its own individuality. Schlegel’s refl ections on Schellingian philosophy
of nature as the source of a new mythology, as well as the interplay between his
conception of mythology and the concepts such as image, symbol and allegory,
and also his understanding of language itself, are interpreted as ways of facing a
single question: how to fi nd a point of support in an age in which everything exists
in the mode of becoming, of tendency. Romantic new mythology promises neither
completion, nor repose, but takes incompleteness of the modern world as an original
experience of freedom, and as a defi ciency that makes possible shared engagement of
modern humanity.
