ESSE AND IDENTITY: ST. AUGUSTINE ON BEING

Abstract

St. Augustine’s metaphysical thought is oriented around the concept of esse, i.e. around the concept of being. St. Augustine used this term as a philosophical indication of the God, but he also applies it to the creatures. The equivocality of the concept of esse is in the center of the analysis in this paper: it is analyzed the view of God as the referent of the term, and in terms of the origin of its constitution in human reason. I argue that the equivocality is the critical and constitutive feature of Augustine’s notion of esse, and that, consequently, the identity of the divine esse is its condition of possibility.
