MIMESIS IS SOMEWHERE ELSE II: A POET IS A PAINTER IS A PHILOSOPHER

Abstract

The paper presents the application of Plato's way of interpreting the mimetic poet through the difference between what is said and how it is said to his criticism of mimesis in the Republic. The first part of the paper follows the difference between what and how of Plato's criticisms within the tenth book of the Republic, all in order to point out the rhapsodic character of the given criticism. The second part of the paper, using the same method, indicates that the reflections of Plato's Socrates on the character of his speech show the philosopher as equal to the poet. Both the philosopher and the poet are thought of as someone else, i.e. they are thought of as painters. Ultimately, the paper concludes that both the poet and philosopher are viewed not in themselves, but in terms of their role in the mimetic game of substitution, demonstrating that mimesis is not understood in his what, but that it is shown by Plato's constant mimetic game of substitution.
